In 1974 Kerstin and Spencer Block opened the first Buffalo Exchange in Tucson, Arizona. Kerstin, hailing from Sweden, thought the word “Buffalo” sounded very American, and since they were introducing the idea of a fashionable clothing “Exchange,” the name was born. In the 45 years since, that 450 square foot store near the University of Arizona has blossomed into almost 50 stores across the US. Buffalo Exchange continues to be run by Kerstin and her daughter Rebecca, and is still headquartered in Tucson. After the passing of Spencer Block, Kerstin and Rebecca published a book of his writings, The Way of the Buffalo. It shares the funny, poignant, and always down-to-earth insights of a truly alternative entrepreneur whose values keep Buffalo Exchange the vibrant and ever-changing company it is today.
